Dana Stabenow has created a great mystery with Restless n the Grave. She has two long-running mystery series, one starring Alaska State Trooper Liam Campbell and the other starring private investigator Kate Shugak. This time she brings them both together to investigate the death of a local pilot.
The problem is there is no lack of suspects in Southwestern Alaska, including Campbell’s wife who happens to be a pilot as well. Shugak goes undercover as a waitress in Bill’s Bar and Grill to discover that victim is hated by most everyone who knew him. His wife, his children, his business associates, well, just about everyone.
Stabenow’s writing is sharp with a large cast of complex characters, intriguing plot and plenty of twists and turns. Of course, she carries the fabulous Mutt along for the ride. Mutt is Shugak’s half dog, half wolf sidekick who adds part humor, part excitement to the mystery work.
Born in Anchorage and raised on a fishing tender in the Gulf of Alaska, Stabenow knows her territory well. Restless in the Grave is the 19th installment in the Kate Shugak series and a novel that can frankly stand on it’s own. If you have never discovered Stabenow and her Kate Shugak series, you can start here. For sure, you will want to then start from the beginning.
As a great fan of Stabenow’s mysteries, Restless in the Grave was no disappointment. It was a fast read just because I couldn’t put it down.
